1/30/2017 0 Comments 100 days of Kindergarten! We had a great time on Friday tasting sauces from Asia. Thank you to Charlie and Eunae for showing us how cooking is like painting. When you add a new spice (color), it changes the beauty and flavor of the dish. Mixing colors (flavors) is pleasing, but instead of for our eyes, it's for our tongues! I was impressed with how many students were willing to try new flavors.
Thursday is going to be quite the celebration! Can you believe it will be the 100th day of Kindergarten? We will spend the day doing 100 activities (or activities about the number 100, there's only a dozen projects!). If you'd like to join in on the fun, we'd like to have volunteers anytime between 9:30-11:00 and 1:00-2:45ish. Thank you to those who have already volunteered. Speaking of 100, this is a fantastic time to make sure your kinder can count to 100. What about counting by 2's, 5's, and 10's? How high can your child go? In math, we continue to work on addition. We are challenging students by integrating some algebra like problems. “I have 3 crayons and then I grabbed some more. Now I have 8 crayons. How many did I grab?” In literacy, we have been working on decoding skills in reading. Remember to do a picture walk before reading, look at the pictures for clues, make the first sound, think about what makes sense, and blend the WHOLE word! At this point in the year, it is important for children to point to the word and not just guess. As the books they are reading get longer and take the form of true stories, you can begin to work on retell. Have your child recall the characters, setting, beginning, middle/problem, and end/solution! Logistics: Schools on the Move- Please try to participate in this wellness challenge. Students who complete the challenge get a t-shirt at the end. Those who don’t get a shirt feel a bit left out. Jump Rope for Heart: Please keep money envelopes until March 3rd. If you earn a coupon for the Rory the Lion, just bring in the coupon. Talent Show: The talent show is for grades 1-5, but the try-outs will affect our specials schedule. Watch your email and text messages for updates.

1/23/2017 0 Comments Amazing AsiaThis week we will study the largest continent, Asia, and follow next week by traveling down under to Australia. I invited the students to share our continent units at home, and many students mentioned that they have family members that have traveled to China, Japan, Iraq, India, and/or Korea. If you have any souvenirs to share from Asia or Australia that your child can share safely (nothing expensive or very special) please send it in. Genuine artifacts help our studies come alive! Also, if you would be comfortable coming in to share and explain anything about places you are from or have visited we would love to hear from you!
The kids are all doing very well with their new reading levels, but the increased difficulty can sometimes cause frustration. To help your child, please have them do a picture walk before reading. This will help with predictions, decoding, and comprehension. Fluency increases the more practice your child gets. It is OK to read the same book to a few different people. It is fun to read when it gets easier and easier every time! Sometimes, your child has memorized the book. That is ok. However, please be sure your child is pointing to the words he or she is reading! Thank you for your support teaching your child to read! Don’t forget to sign-up to volunteer for workstations. I love when students can read with an adult every day, practice sight words, and get help with writing. Just click the link below. Specials this week: TUESDAY is a skip day in specials. Instead of a regular specials day, students will learn about Jump Rope for Heart and schools on the move. Even though we had PE today (Monday), we will have music on Wednesday, art is on Thursday and media will be on Friday. Do have incoming 2017 Kindergarten students? If so, please join us for orientation on Thursday from 6:00-7:30 in the media center. If you know any families with incoming kinders, please share that information… especially if this is their first kinder. Kindergarten students get to come down to the room to play! No siblings please. Happy New Year and welcome back! I hope everyone had a fun break filled with family time and laughter. It is always a bit tough to get back in the swing of school. Sticking to routines (bed time, homework, reading time, etc) will help your child this week. Hopefully, the only thing that will be melting is the snow! Until it melts, I suggest sending boots to school, but unless your child wants to roll and sit in the snow, snow pants are not really necessary. Hats and gloves are a great idea. Be sure to put in names in everything!
January is an exciting time in Kindergarten. Maybe the students feel energized after the break or maybe they are just developmentally ready, but I see many students really take off this time of year. Let’s capitalize on that!
Please let me know if you will be out this month. We will be doing some testing with DIBELS, reading levels, phonics levels and math. Mid-year is a great time to monitor progress and re-group if necessary. I will share this information with you individually as it becomes available. |
