Kid, you'll move mountains.

2/29/2016 0 Comments Leap Day and Dr. SeussHoppy Leap Day! We had a great day singing "5 Little Speckled Frogs," reading Froggy books, and hopping around. Can't wait to do it again... in 4 years.
For the rest of the week, we will be celebrating Read Across America. We have lots of Dr. Seuss activities planned, which, I am sure you know are my favorite. It is fun to see kids pick up some of his decode-able books and realize that they can truly read "real" books. Spring is a fun time in Kindergarten because the kids make such amazing growth. Our benchmark report cards will go home on Friday. I am also sending home a report with DIBELS scores, ReadingEggs and Raz-kids levels, and a completely independent writing sample. Please let me know if you have any questions or if you would like to sit down and chat. We do not have to wait until conferences in April to discuss your child! Important Reminders: Schools on the Move (yellow sheet) forms are due by Friday. There is some information that does need to be filled out along with a parent signature , t-shirt size, and some questions. Thank you for taking the time to do this. Remember, students need 60 check marks to get the free shirt. Jump Rope for Heart: If you have any checks or cash for Jump Rope for Heart, please send them in as soon as possible. They are due by Friday. Thank you for all your support!

2/22/2016 0 Comments American SymbolsAlthough February is the shortest month, it sometimes feels like the longest, so we have been keeping busy in Kindergarten to make the time pass quickly! Kindergarten is always full of joy, laughter and fun. It's great to see the kids embrace this as they continue to learn and grow. This is the last week in our second trimester of Kindergarten. As I wrap up assessments, I am blown away by the growth every student has made. Report cards will be sent home in Friday folders on March 4th.
Last week, we learned about some of the most influential presidents in US history: George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, and Thomas Jefferson just to name a few! This week, we are studying American symbols like Mount Rushmore, Liberty Bell, Lady Liberty, and famous monuments. Have you traveled to any of these places, time to pullout old pictures and share them with your wide-eyed child! In reading, many students have graduated from decoding and early literacy skills to fluency and comprehension. As your child begins to read books that tell a story, ask your child to retell the story including elements like character, setting, beginning, middle and end. Make connections to the story and ask your child questions like "why?" and "how?". Help your child to think about the story as he or she reads. Subtraction has taken center stage in math. Counting backwards (like a blast off!) is a great way to scaffold this difficult skill. We don't do timed tests or flash cards in kindergarten. Right now, we are focused on understanding the concept and learning methods to find the answer. Memorizing facts will come soon enough! We have reduced the amount of homework that we send home this year. PLEASE remember that instead of worksheets, students need to be working on Reading Eggs and Raz-Kids. These are fantastic programs. Students who have consistently used the programs make tremendous growth! Thank you for supporting your child at home. Here are some important dates. Please note the changes to specials around the talent show for grades 1-5. On the "skip day," we will have specials but it will not count in the typical rotation. Thursday, February 25- Zach Spirit Day-Wear your green and gold Thursday, February 25- Barnes and Noble book fair and Chick-Fil-A night Friday, February 26- NO SCHOOL Teacher Work Day Monday, February 29- LEAP DAY! Can you believe Friday will be the 100th day of Kindergarten (minus a snow day here and there, shhh!) We will spend the day doing 100 activities (or activities about the number 100, there's only a dozen projects!). If you'd like to join in on the fun, we'd like to have volunteers anytime between 9:30-11:30ish and 1:20-2:45ish. Please send an email if you know you will be able to help out for any amount of time. If it's Friday and you suddenly decide you have some time, you are also welcome to just show up as well!
Speaking of 100, this is a fantastic time to make sure your kinder can count to 100. What about counting by 2's, 5's, and 10's? How high can your child go? In math, we continue to work on addition. The students are doing so well, that we are enriching the math standards with time and money. They are really taking off! In literacy, we have been working on decoding skills in reading. Remember to do a picture walk before reading, look at the pictures for clues, make the first sound, think about what makes sense, and blend the WHOLE word! As the books they are reading get longer and take the form of true stories, you can begin to work on retell. Have your child recall the characters, setting, beginning, middle/problem, and end/solution! PLEASE NOTE: BECAUSE OF THE SCHOOL DAY, THE SPECIALS SCHEDULE IS PUSHED OUT A DAY ON THE CHART IN THE FOLDER. We had technology today, so tomorrow is PE. Are you working on Schools on the Move? We are encouraging healthy snacks at school, especially fruits and vegetables. They count towards the 5! Today was workout Wednesday. We definitely got in our 60 minutes today during brain breaks and recesses! Be sure to start working little by little on your Valentine's cards. Your child should be doing his or her neatest writing. If you wait until the last minute, there may be a melt down! You can begin sending them to school on Monday. Thank you for not including candy with the Valentine's. |
