11/18/2018 0 Comments Happy ThanksgivingI am truly thankful for my job. Every day, I get about a 100 hugs, reasons to smile, and a feeling of pride when I see the growth students are making! Thank you for sharing your amazing children with me this year. I am truly grateful
Tomorrow, we will finish our Core Knowledge unit of Native Americans and Pilgrims. What other way to celebrate than with a feast! No need to pack a snack, we will have veggies, fruit, cheese, fish (in the form of goldfish), and pumpkin pie. I will send pictures on SeeSaw of the kids in their Pilgrim hats. I love this time of year: the bite of the crisp winter air on my nose, smelling turkey and baked goods in the kitchen, shiny decorations hung with care, sweet candy and cocoa, and the sound of excited children and twinkling bells! We will dive into our unit on the five senses after break. Thank you for taking time to read the guiding document with the report cards. Remember the scores are based on end-of-year expectations, but feel free to ask me if you have any questions. Please be sure to use ReadingEggs and MathSeeds on a regular basis at home. I can tell the kids who are using it because they are really taking-off in reading and number sense in math. Thank you for supporting your Kinder!

11/4/2018 0 Comments Elections and Native AmericansTuesday is a big day in Kindergarten… Election Day! Don’t worry we won’t be discussing any candidates or amendment. However, we are about to fill our jewel jar (amazing how that timing works), so we will need to vote on how to celebrate. The students nominate choices: toys from home, crazy hair, day extra recess, pajama day, and extra free choice. Then, students got to campaign for their choice. What option do they feel is best and why? Finally, each student gets a ballot to cast their vote and walk away with an "I Voted!" sticker. After the votes are tallied, the electoral college (me!) announces the winner. We will discuss how it is ok to be disappointed by the results of our election, but majority rules and we have to go with the final decision. Life lessons! I wonder if any of these little leaders will find their way into politics someday...
In core, we will study the Native Americans and how they lived before North American was settled by the Pilgrims. Next week, we will learn about the pilgrims. Why did they leave their homes to come live in an inhabited and dangerous land? The weather and unfamiliar lands made it very difficult. At the end of the week, we will learn how the Native Americans taught the pilgrims skills like farming and hunting to help save them from the harsh climate. Friday is the last day of the trimester. Kindergarten report cards look different than you may be used to. We will be focusing on your child's progress toward meeting the end of the year benchmark on a 1-4 scale. Remember that a 3 means they met end of year benchmarks. A 4 means that they have exceeded expectations. In many areas, a 4 is not an option. For example, students cannot earn a 4 on letter identification. It’s impossible to name more than the 26 letters! Please let me know if you have any questions when the report comes home next week. As the holidays approach, please let me know if there are any family traditions that you do or do not celebrate that I should be aware of as we learn about different celebrations. Remember to remind students to “keep magic alive” if they no longer believe. |
