Kid, you'll move mountains.

9/18/2015 0 Comments Apples, Apples, Apples! It's a little bit crazy that we've been in school over a month and it is still technically summer! I am looking forward to the start of fall and hopefully cooler weather next week. To celebrate the start of fall, we will talk about not only the season, but the delicious fruit that comes with it... APPLES! We will even make some applesauce to finish out the week.
In math, we have been working on counting with 1:1 correspondence (counting objects one at a time). You can practice at home by counting toy cars, coins, crayons, etc. Please also work on writing numbers. We completed a number book with poems to help write numbers this week. It is in the Friday folder today. The students have also been working very hard on their fine motor skills. While we will continue working on that skill throughout the year, it will not be the primary focus. If your child struggles with handwritting, pencil grip, cutting paper, zippers, etc., please see this website for FUN activities to try at home: http://therapystreetforkids.com/fm-strength.html This week in WIN (what I need) students will be working on social skills. We will learn how to play by the rules with friends, to take turns, and that it is ok to lose! I love teaching Kindergarten because we have to opportunity to help develop and nurture the whole child!

9/13/2015 0 Comments Building the Foundation! Our class has really settled into kindergarten, mastering routines and our busy schedule. It is hard to believe we've only been in school a few short weeks.
This week we will begin to wrap up Unit 1 of our literacy curriculum, Amplify. In this introductory unit, we teach some of the foundational skills used to blend and decode in writing and reading. We are counting sounds, learning left/right progression, and developing beginning writing skills like proper pencil grip and making horizontal, vertical and round lines. On Friday, I sent home a yellow sheet with results from our beginning of the year assessments. Choose one or two skills to work on with your child. If you need to work on identifying letters and/or sounds, use your leveled reader to play a letter hunt game. After you read, go back and find letters. Can you think of other words that begin with that sound? If you are working on numbers, make finding numbers and counting a part of everyday activities. Count steps, crayons, peas on your plate at dinner! Can you find aisle 12 at the grocery store? What comes next? In Core, we are moving from plants to farms. How do we grow the food that we eat? What else can be produced on a farm? There are lots of fun and cute animals to discover on the farm as well! Half-day kindergarten, this Wednesday is the first day of before school specials. This week the kids have PE, wear your gym shoes! Remember to only read one book from the leveled readers each night. If you feel like you have more time and energy, work on letters, sounds, numbers and writing! Thank you for your support. 9/8/2015 2 Comments Plants! Our Kinder Gardens are looking beautiful! This week, we are going to dive in and explore plants and their needs. We will be watching to see how thee plants change in late summer to fall and again in the spring. What do you see changing in your yard and neighborhood?
Last Friday, the kids began to explore our new bikes. Thanks to the ZEF Enrichment Fund, we are able to provide opportunities for exercise, cross brain development and fun! There is compelling research linking physical activity to academic success. Thank you for your generosity and contributions. Leveled readers will begin coming home this week. Please only read one book each night. There is a letter in the leveled reader bag with tips and tricks to help your child begin to read and explore books. Please take the time to read the letter and make the most out of this exciting time with your child. On Friday, we will send home a yellow paper called, "Look What I Can Do!" This is a report of most of the assessments we have completed to get to know your child. Remember that it is only a starting point. What fun it will be to see the growth from August to May! |
