11/28/2016 0 Comments Sensing the Season!I hope you enjoyed Thanksgiving and your long weekend at home and were able to spend time as a family and relax. Thank you so much for giving the gift of time with your precious child. I cannot put into words how much I love my job because I get to spend time with funny, caring, adventurous, sweet kids. Thanks again for sharing your child with me this year.
I love this time of year: the bite of the crisp winter air on my nose, smelling turkey and baked goods in the kitchen, shiny decorations hung with care, sweet candy and cocoa, and the sound of excited children and twinkling bells! It is the perfect time for us to dive into our unit on the five senses. We will learn about how our bodies work to take in the world around us. In Amplify, we are decoding CVC words and manipulating the sounds to create real and nonsense words. Students are working on reading words on sight instead of stretching out every sound. Please refer to the sight words listed on this page. Students should be able to read those words within a few seconds. We will start sending home individualized sight word lists in January. As we get closer to the holidays, please discuss your family traditions with your child and remind them how lucky we are to live in a place where people are free to celebrate as they choose. We will touch on some of the major winter holidays. Please let me know what holidays your family celebrates. We want to be sure to include everyone! Will you be traveling over the holidays? School goes right up to December 23rd. Please let me know if and when your child will be out! Remember to work on the holiday tree homework due Monday, December 5th. It looks like many students have been using MathSeeds. Great work! Don't forget about ReadingEggs. The phonics instruction on that program is HIGHLY effective.

11/8/2016 0 Comments Election Day!It was a big day in Kindergarten today... Voting Day! Don't worry, we didn't mention anyone that rhymes with Slinton or Srump. We filled our jewel jar and voted on how to celebrate. The students nominated choices: toys from home, crazy hair, day extra recess, pajama day, and extra free choice. Then, students got to campaign for their choice. What option did they feel was best and why? Finally, each student got a ballot, cast their vote, and walked away with an "I Voted!" sticker. After the votes were tallied, the electoral college (me!) announced the winner. Drum roll please..... EXTRA FREE CHOICE! Tomorrow morning, we will have extra free choice in the morning to celebrate our positive ROAR behavior. We discussed how it is ok to be disappointed by the results of our election, but majority rules and we have to go with the final decision. Life lessons! We also read Duck for President. I wonder if any of these little leaders will find their way into politics someday...
In math, we are working on decomposing numbers. That is complicated away to say that we are setting the conceptual foundation for addition and subtraction. How many ways can you make 10? 6 and 4, 5 and 5, 7 and 3, they are learning to use patterns to figure out all the options. In writing, we are working on pattern books. Pattern books take on the same format as early readers by repeating the same sentence starter on each page. This helps students learn sight words, feel like successful writers, and bridge the connection between writing and reading. Encourage your child to create and write at home! Remember that there is no school this Friday due to a teacher work day. The first trimester ends on November 10th. We will send home report cards on November 18th. If you will be missing school during the upcoming holidays, please let me know asap. We have several activities including out feast planned, and we need to prepare for absences. Also, feel free to let me know if your family does not participate in Winter Holiday celebrations like Christmas and Hanukkah. |
