Kid, you'll move mountains.

3/23/2018 0 Comments Spring has sprung! What a wonderful week back from spring break it has been. Wow, doesn’t spring break seem like a long time ago, not just one week!?! Our theme this week was spring and next week is eggs and bunnies.
Here’s what we have been working on: Math: Addition and Subtraction fluency- Students are learning and using multiple strategies to add and subtract quickly. They must have a firm number sense to fully conceptualize this skill, especially when they must decide whether to add or subtract in a word problem. Remember, counting on fingers is a GOOD thing. Don’t stop them. Writing: “How To…” stories coming home today- Learning explain something in a detailed, step-by-step process is challenging. One of my favorite parts of the day, is having a student tell me how to do something. I follow exactly what they tell me do which typically ends in a total mess. The giggles erupt, students smile, and then they edit their writing. The "how to" unit in writing brings out my most diligent editors! Reading: Self-correcting errors and retell: Reading is another great time to practice the growth mindset. When a student self-corrects mistakes, ask your child how or why they corrected the word. I always tell them, "that's what good readers do." We read to make sense of the text, and when it doesn't, we go back and fix our mistakes. As students’ fluency increases, we are also working on comprehension. A big step in that process is retelling the story with details about setting, characters, beginning, middle and end. In order to do this, we must think as we read, not just decode the words. There is a lot going on in those little brains! Conferences: Spring conferences are not mandatory but are available. Please know that these conferences are to discuss your child's academics or questions you may have for me about your child this year. These conferences are not to discuss class placement for next year. This is a strict school policy this year, and I am required to follow protocol. If you are interested in having a conference scheduled, please email me and we will figure out the best time for both of us to meet. Typically, I am available before or after school, except before school on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays due to meetings. I can also meet during my plan/lunch at 11:55-12:25 or 12:35-1:05 "Fail early, fail often, but always fail forward.”
