11/30/2015 0 Comments Sensing the SeasonI love this time of year: the bite of the crisp winter air on my nose, smelling turkey and baked goods in the kitchen, shiny decorations hung with care, sweet candy and cocoa, and the sound of excited children and twinkling bells! It is the prefect time for us to dive into our unit on the five senses. We will learn about how our bodies work to take in the world around us.
As we get closer to the holidays, please discuss your family traditions with your child and remind them how lucky we are to live in a place where people are free to celebrate as they choose. We will touch on some of the major winter holidays. Please let me know what holidays your family celebrates. We want to be sure to include everyone! In math, we are exploring graphing data. We will still be reinforcing number sense and identifying numbers, but our main objective will be accurately recording data on a graph. Where do we use graphs in our daily lives? Can your child find some examples? In amplify, we are decoding CVC words and manipulating the sounds to create real and nonsense words. Students are working on reading words on sight instead of stretching out every sound. Please refer to the sight words listed on this page. Students should be able to read those words within a few seconds. We will start sending home individualized sight word lists in January. Our "Super Writers" have begun to publish books. They are real authors! In order to publish, the writers must have at least 3 pages, with kindergarten coloring, labels on the picture, and words to teach the reader about the topic. We have been building up to this point all year. It is a very big deal to publish! Have a great week, and as always, let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

11/11/2015 Pilgrims and Native AmericansBrrr! Our first snowy day went very well. Thank you for sending kids with coats, hats, gloves and snow boots. Our rule is that students must stay on the paved blacktop unless they have on waterproof snow boots. They may not sit, roll or lay in the snow without snow pants. We love letting the kids get outside and play as much as possible, so we will only keep them in if the temperature including wind chill is 15 degrees or below. When they come back in to learn and work, they need to be dry, warm and comfortable enough to learn. Thank you for helping with this!
We have been studying the Native Americans and how they lived before North American was settled by the Pilgrims. We discussed how they made everything they had including a papoose (baby carrier), parfleche (small bag), homes, clothes, and tools including arrow heads. Next week, we will learn about the pilgrims. Why did they leave their homes to come live in an inhabited and dangerous land? The weather and unfamiliar lands made it very difficult. At the end of the week, we will learn how the Native Americans taught the pilgrims skills like farming and hunting to help save them from the harsh climate. On November 24th, we will celebrate our completion of the Native Amerrican and Pilgrim Unit with a Thanksgiving Feast. Please watch for a note coming home soon! Tomorrow is our first "Super Zeph" assembly. This is very similar to our ROAR assemblies held in the past. The goal is to recognize outstanding Zach students who show ROAR (Respectful Organized Attentive Responsible) behaviors everyday. This year, only one student from each class is recognized at the assembly. More awards will be given in our own classroom. Students are encouraged to dress up for this whole school assembly. Because of capacity, the assembly is for students and staff only. Thursday is the last day of the trimester. As I shared in conferences, kindergarten report cards will look different this year. We will be focusing on your child's progress toward meeting the end of the year benchmarks. Your child will be marked as "Secure" or "In Progress." Please let me know if you have any questions when the report comes home next week. |
