10/19/2015 0 Comments Sail Away with ColumbusThank you for meeting with me last week. I love getting to know you and your family as it helps me to know and understand your child better as well. If you have any additional questions or concerns after our discussions, please email, call or visit with me after school!
Core: This week we will meet Christopher Columbus. We will learn about how he traveled to North America in search of an easier spice trade route. Silly Columbus thought he was in the Indies and called the native people Indians! Literacy: We begin our third unit in Amplify this week. Students are blending and segmenting longer words. We are also learning sound spelling. Writing: We begin Writer's workshop this week. Throughout the year, we refer to our young authors as "Super Writers!" We will learn to solve problems and that when you think you're done, you've just begun! Math: We are continuing to develop a strong number sense. The students are dissecting teen numbers into a ten and ones. We are also practicing to write our numbers. On Wednesday, I will be at the district's Wellness Workshop. The guest speakers will discuss childhood anxiety, "Laughaceutical," and more strategies and benefits to incorporating wellness in the classroom and school.

10/5/2015 1 Comment Europe and Royaltye had a great time learning about fall and pumpkins last week. Now, with the change in weather, it finally feels like fall!
Core: We introduce the seven continents for Core Knowledge in Kindergarten. This week, as we learn about Europe, we will focus on royalty as an precursor to Columbus and the pilgrims. Our class is lucky to have several students with direct ties to European countries, Finland, Italy, and England. It will be fun to see some souvenirs from these countries! Friday, we will read Princess and the Pea. A pajama day is a must to truly celebrate this core story! Writing: Our last few students will present their student of the day posters this week. It has been fun getting to know our classmates. I hope your child enjoyed the book their classmates created for them! At the end of the week, we will begin the writing curriculum that we will use for the rest of the year, Units of Study by Lucy Calkins. Math: A strong foundation in number sense is incredibly important. We have been working on number identification, writing numbers, and place value. Keep pointing out numbers everywhere you go. Students love to see the importance of numbers in daily life. Level Readers: I have received many notes in the leveled readers bags that the books seem too easy. That is great news! I will continue to re-test and evaluate your student's just-right reading level. Books that are sent home should be at the independent reading level, so they need to pass the benchmark test with at least 95% accuracy. Also, remember that we read with the students at school every day. They should come home feeling very confident. However, PLEASE make sure your child is pointing to the word they are reading. If they get to an unknown word, ask them to make the first sound and look for a picture clue. That's what we do in class! Field Trip: If you have not sent in your permission slip. Please bring it today! I will let those who have asked to volunteer know today if you get to join us. Thank you for volunteering. Please dress for the weather, pack a lunch in a throw away container/bag, and send in a reusable grocery sack to gather produce as soon as possible. |
