10/21/2018 0 Comments What's Wondering Wednesday?Thank you for meeting with me last week. I love getting to know you and your family as it helps me to know and understand your child better as well. If you have any additional questions or concerns after our discussions, please email, call, or visit with me after school! We are so excited to head to Anderson Farms for our field trip tomorrow! This hands-on adventure complements our science unit on plants and animals and their needs. We will revisit these topics throughout the year and explore how the changing seasons mean changes for plants and animals. Have you heard about Wondering Wednesday? On Wednesdays our focus is on science and wondering. We have been watching Mystery Doug to learn about some interesting topics. (https://mysterydoug.com/) This week we will find out about the biggest spider in the world. Ewww! Do you have a science expertise? We’d love to host you on a wondering Wednesday if there is something that you would like to share with us! Here is what else is going on in Kindergarten: Literacy: Students are blending and segmenting longer words. We are also learning sound spelling. Writing: We will be finishing our pattern books and begin “Writer’s Workshop.” Our young authors will be writing teaching books about some of their favorite things! Math: We are continuing to develop a strong number sense with a focus on teen numbers. The students are decomposing and comparing numbers. Core: Fall and Pumpkins

10/8/2018 0 Comments Try, Try again! Mistakes are good! This week in Core we are learning about Columbus. Often times, explorers don't find what they were looking for on the first try. Sometimes, they find something completely different and wonderful. What would have happened if they gave up because it was hard or they made a mistake?
In our class, we are learning that mistakes are a good thing... as long as we learn from them of course! The kids are learning to celebrate mistakes because it means that out brains are growing. Students showcase this in math by presenting mistakes and correcting misconceptions, talking out disagreements with friends, finding ways to correct spelling in our writing, and reread to make corrections in our reading. Please continue to encourage your child to embrace mistakes at home. How can we make a mistake if we never try anything new or challenging? Kindergarten is about exploring and growing in all ways! Trying to write a word with multiple syllables or drawing a picture that we never knew we could. We are always looking for ways to help our brains grow. Encourage your child to do things independently at home even if it takes more time or it doesn't work out the first time. How will we learn if we don't get the chance to try? Pretty soon your child will be running the house and getting things done! Are you sending books and folders to school every day? Thank you! We try to practice reading with every child, every day. This week, we did not send home leveled readers. Please also spend time reading to your child. ReadingEggs and Mathseeds are also a great way to practice and extend learning this week. I am excited to talk to you more at your child's conference next week. Many conferences are back-to-back, so please be on time. If it is your conference time, please knock on the door to help us stay on schedule. Volunteering is a great way to get a sneak peek into your child’s world. Thank you to those who have already been in the room. We love your help! https://www.signupgenius.com/go/9040a45aca62da57-workstations1 Here's what's going on in Kindergarten: Phonics: Blending 3-4 phoneme words Writing: Finishing Student of the day and beginning pattern books Math: Comparing numbers, ways to make 10 and writing numbers Reading: Using sight words, first sounds and picture clues to decode in our books Core: Columbus |
