10/30/2016 0 Comments Happy Halloween!Tomorrow is Halloween. I am not sure we are all ready, but take a deep breathe and lets dive into this crazy week! Tomorrow, we have our party in the room from 10-11. You are welcome to come join us for the fun. Siblings are welcome, but please bring snacks from home. Snacks and activities are for the kinders. I have plenty of toys they can play with! The parade is at 2:15. Please see the parent newsletter for logistics. Half-day kinders are welcome to come back to the room to join us for the parade!
Candy is a very exciting part of Halloween, but please do not send candy as a snack to school this week. They need something substantial to get through the day, especially as the adrenaline, excitement and fun wear off throughout the week. After learning about Christopher Columbus' travels, we will study the people he mistakenly labeled the Indians, the Native Americans. It is fun to imagine what life would have been like to use everything from the land and animals around you!

10/17/2016 0 Comments Christopher ColumbusThank you for meeting with me last week. I love getting to know you and your family as it helps me to know and understand your child better as well. If you have any additional questions or concerns after our discussions, please email, call, or visit with me after school!
We had our hearing and vision screening today. You will receive a call only if there is a concern. Otherwise, assume all is well. We have a hayride field trip on Friday. Have you turned in your permission slip? Don't forget to dress your child for the weather. Core: This week we will meet Christopher Columbus. We will learn about how he traveled to North America in search of an easier spice trade route. Silly Columbus thought he was in the Indies and called the native people Indians! Literacy: We begin our third unit in Amplify this week. Students are blending and segmenting longer words. We are also learning sound spelling. Writing: Our young authors are loving their teaching books and are almost ready to publish! Throughout the year, we refer to our young authors as "Super Writers!" We will learn to solve problems and that when you think you're done, you've just begun! Math: We are continuing to develop a strong number sense. The students are decomposing and comparing numbers. We are also practicing writing our numbers. Keep practicing those tricky teens and counting to 100 and beyond. On Wednesday, I will be at a Math training to gain a deeper understanding of our new math program, Envision. Please call the room (488-5130) if you need anything. We had a great time learning about fall and pumpkins last week. Later this week, the weather should change and finally feel like fall. Please dress your child in layers as the weather shifts. Start working on putting on and zipping coats independently. Label everything! Also check the extra clothes in the backpacks. It is a good idea to make them season appropriate.
Core: We introduce the seven continents for Core Knowledge in Kindergarten. This week, as we learn about Europe, we will focus on royalty as a precursor to Columbus and the pilgrims. The students are making flags out of play-doh and landmarks out of blocks. To show-off, they are uploading them on to their See-saw accounts. If you misplaced your individual child’s account access, please email me and I will send you a new one. Math: A strong foundation in number sense is incredibly important. We have been working on number identification, writing numbers, and place value. Keep pointing out numbers everywhere you go. Students love to see the importance of numbers in daily life. Level Readers: I have received many notes in the leveled readers bags that the books seem too easy. That is great news! I will continue to re-test and evaluate your student's just-right reading level. Books that are sent home should be at the independent reading level, so they need to pass the benchmark test with at least 95% accuracy. Also, remember that we read with the students at school every day. They should come home feeling very confident. However, PLEASE make sure your child is pointing to the word they are reading. If they get to an unknown word, ask them to make the first sound and look for a picture clue. That's what we do in class! Conferences are on Thursday next week. I have professional development on Friday. Please remember to sign up for a 20 minute slot: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/9040a45aca62da57-fall1 |
