2/22/2015 0 Comments Heading Down UnderNext week, we will travel to Australia! We get to learn about important wildlife and landmarks including kangaroos, koalas, emus, the Opera House, the Sydney Bridge, and Uluru. Mrs. Dachel's husband is coming to play the didgeridoo!
I have been able to read with all the students this week. I have a few tips to help your budding readers. Even though it seems like your child is cruising along, it is still important to slow down and focus on each word in entirety. Pease continue to encourage your child to point to each word and make self-corrections when they mis-read a word. When he or she is done reading, ask your child to retell the story using specific details and pronouns. Ask questions like, "What was your favorite part and why?" and "How did this part make you feel and why?" Most important celebrate the growth and progress your child has made. It is truly amazing! In class, we have been working on memorizing sight words, phone numbers, addresses, and student identification numbers. Encourage our child to continue working on the at home as well! The sight words are always on this newsletter link. Try reading and then spelling all the words. In math, we are rocking and rolling with addition and subtraction! The students are learning to justify thinking and show understanding using manipulatives. All of these skills will help build a solid foundation for mathematic careers. Wow, that's exciting news! You can reinforce all of this at home by making math a part of every day life. Verbalize how you use math at the grocery store, cooking, at work, driving or telling time.

2/2/2015 0 Comments Core Stories and Sayings"Look before you leap!" "Better safe than sorry!" and "Great oaks from little acorns grow." These simple sayings are part of the Core Knowledge curriculum, and this week we will be talking about what they mean. Hopefully, you will hear your kinder trying to use these phrases at home! We will also be reading Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs as one of our core stories. What dwarf would you be?
In math, we are exploring subtraction. What does subtraction mean and how can we use it? Students are showing subtraction through manipulatives and stories. Homework this week is to work on Valentine cards. Remember to tackle this project a little bit at a time. Your child should be writing the names and signing his/her name on each card. Think about holding the pencil correctly and being neat! |
