10/19/2014 0 Comments Welcome to Second Quarter!Welcome to the second quarter! Just a reminder that the orange "Look What I Know!" sheet sent home on Wednesday serves as the first quarter report card for Kindergarten. I truly enjoy conferences because I get to know the children better by getting to know you! As you process the information and our conversations, please let me know if you have any additional questions, concerns or information.
We have been switching classes for a week in math. The students are excited about the change and enjoying deepening their understanding of numbers. A strong number sense is so important as a foundational skill in math! Your "Super Writer" loves Writer's Workshop where they have been working on solving writing problems (tough words, what to write, and even broken pencils) to SAVE THE DAY! The students get to be the boss of their writing. What kindergartener can resist the chance to be the boss!?! In Literacy, we are learning to isolate sounds in words and continuing to differentiate letter sounds. We are even learning to correctly write several letters. For Core, we are learning about Christopher Columbus. In our read alouds, we will be listening for details and facts. Halloween is just around the corner! Kindergarten students may wear costumes to school all day. This is different than grades 1-5 who change into costumes at school. Our party will be from 1:00-2:00 followed by the parade at 2:15. Thank you to those who volunteered to help with the party. I will contact you on Monday with party details! Homework Due October 27th: Number Book, leveled readers and online programs

10/5/2014 0 Comments Welcome to Fall!It is hard to believe the first quarter of Kindergarten is almost over! We will wrap up first quarter assessments this week. It is fun to see how much all of the students have grown already this year. Thank you for all your support at home.
In math, we are learning to write, represent, compare and decompose numbers 0-10. To provide variety, extension and intervention, we will begin switching classes for math. The kids will either go to Mrs. Lemon's or Mrs. Mishak's class for the math block. In literacy, we will continue to build a strong phonics foundation by learning to listen to sounds and words. We will begin writer's workshop this week allowing students to explore becoming "super writers." Super writers use problem solving to sound out tricky words, sentences and eventually stories. In core, we are exploring the fall season. On Monday, I am sending home a letter and log-in information for an online program called Reading Eggs. The students already took the placement test and are ready to rock this amazing phonics and literacy program. Working on the program weekly is homework. Please make use of this program graciously funded by ZEF funds. This week is classified staff appreciation week. We miss Kim Scherer who is amazing at helping the kids with small group instruction in math, reading and writing. The kids bond quickly with Kim and love being with her. We are lucky to have Kris Kissel in the room while Kim is out. Kris is positive, fun and energetic. She has kept the classroom running smoothly and makes us smile every day! A big thank you goes out to these two wonderful women! |
